The problem

Why UK homes get damp

Around 80% of UK housing was built before modern insulation standards — solid brick walls, single-pane windows and almost no built-in ventilation. In winter, cold external walls meet warm, moist indoor air from cooking, showers and breathing, and the moisture has nowhere to go but onto your windows and walls.

Renters are hit hardest. You can't rip out the windows, install a positive-pressure ventilation system or re-render the outside walls. Landlords often blame "lifestyle" rather than fix the building, leaving tenants paying the heating bills and scrubbing the mould.

The good news: with the right £10–£200 of Amazon kit, you can measure humidity, dry the air, stop condensation forming and treat existing mould — without changing a single thing about the property itself. That's what this category is for.

Keep Warm UK Tip

Start with a £10 humidity meter

The most important first step is measuring humidity. A £10 humidity meter (hygrometer) tells you if your home is above 60% RH — the danger zone for mould growth. Until you know your numbers, you're guessing.
