Oil Filled Radiator Running Cost UK 2026 — Real Numbers

Updated July 2026

An oil filled radiator costs approximately 30–49p per hour to run in the UK, depending on the wattage setting. But the real running cost is 30–40% less than the maximum because oil radiators have thermostats that cycle the heating element on and off. Here are the exact numbers for every wattage, plus how to reduce the cost further.

Quick answer

Our top pick: De'Longhi Dragon 4 2500W

Approx. £140 on Amazon

The most efficient oil filled radiator in our tests. Chimney Effect technology heats the room 25% faster, so the thermostat cycles it off sooner. Expect 30–38p per hour on medium in a UK-sized bedroom or living room.

Medium1500W37p22–28p

Max2500W61p37–48p

Based on UK electricity rate of 24.5p/kWh (July 2026).

How to calculate your oil radiator running cost

Formula:

Wattage ÷ 1000 × electricity rate (p/kWh) = cost per hour

  • 800W: 800 ÷ 1000 × 24.5 = 19.6p per hour
  • 1500W: 1500 ÷ 1000 × 24.5 = 36.75p per hour
  • 2000W: 2000 ÷ 1000 × 24.5 = 49p per hour
  • 2500W: 2500 ÷ 1000 × 24.5 = 61.25p per hour

The thermostat is the reason your real cost is 30–40% lower. Once the room reaches your target temperature, the element switches off and coasts on stored heat from the oil inside the fins. It only re-engages when the air cools below the setpoint.

Running cost per day, week and month

Based on a 2000W oil filled radiator running 4 hours per day with a thermostat.

PeriodCost
Per day (4 hours)£1.20 – £1.52
Per week£8.40 – £10.64
Per month£36 – £46
Per winter season (5 months)£180 – £228

Oil radiator vs fan heater running costs

A 2000W fan heater draws 49p per hour flat — no thermostat cycling — because it relies on you turning it off. A 2000W oil radiator with a thermostat averages 30–38p per hour in the same room. Over a winter that's £70–£100 saved.

5 ways to reduce oil radiator running costs

  1. Use medium not maximum. Oil radiators heat by convection — max setting doesn't warm the room faster, it just costs more before the thermostat cuts in.
  2. Use the built-in timer. Set 30 minutes before you enter the room and 30 minutes before you leave. The stored heat carries you through.
  3. Close doors to trap the heat. An open door doubles the volume the radiator has to warm.
  4. Use a smart plug with energy monitoring to see exactly what you're spending. Check on Amazon →
  5. Draught-proof the room first. A leaky room bleeds heat out as fast as the radiator puts it in. Best draught excluders →

Cost-saving tips at a glance

Tip

Medium beats maximum

Oil radiators build up stored heat over time. Running on medium then coasting on the thermostat is 20–30% cheaper than running on max and switching off manually.

We recommend

One room, closed door

An oil radiator is cheaper than central heating for one room. Central heating wins once you're warming three or more rooms at once.
